Written by Warner Glenn himself, Eyes of Fire: Encounter with A Borderlands Jaguar contains the story of Warner’s adventure of finding and tracking a jaguar on United States soil down in the Peloncillo Mountains near the Mexican-American border. With multiple photos of the jaguar he and his hounds tracked included within its pages to help accent the adventure, this is a great story written by the legend himself.

Warner does not waste much time, jumping right into the start of this historic encounter back in March of 1996. With mighty winds blowing in from the East on this hunt, Warner begins to detail how he, his daughter Kelly and the rest of their hunting party began descending into the rocky canyons near the Peloncillo Mountains, winding their way through the treacherous terrain while trying to keep up with their dogs who were hot on the trail of what Warner thought was a big Tom. After catching up with his now baying dogs, Warner’s realization that he was in fact staring at a jaguar and not the big Tom he thought they were tracking was a great moment to read about. The way Warner writes it allows you to feel like you were standing there with him, sharing in what was a very emotional moment for him.

What was even more interesting was the fact that Warner, being the famous lion hunter that he was, chose to not pull out a rifle or pistol, but instead chose to pull out a camera and radio for Kelly to help him get the dogs away from the jaguar. The result was a series of some amazing photos of the jaguar. Warner includes a good number of these photos in the middle of the book and goes over what is going on in almost everyone one of them, so you have context as to what you’re looking at in each scene. These photos (the only ones of a live jaguar in the wilds of the United States) and Warner’s closing comments help to further showcase how much he is dedicated to protecting animals that need it and preserving the wilds of the Southwestern United States for these animals. This again adds to his legendary life and helps to show how much hound hunters and other hunters alike care about the land and the animals that reside on it.

Overall, while being a rather quick read, Eyes of Fire: Encounter with A Borderlands Jaguar written by Warner Glenn is a great read. The personal account by Warner himself is a rather captivating story and the photos are something you would more commonly see in a National Geographic magazine. This book is perfect for hunters, animal lovers, and fans of the American Southwest. The brevity of the book makes it an easy and fun read for just about anyone and the multitude of photos contained in it make it a perfect coffee table book that can be shared with any of your friends or family that happen to stop by.
