In addition to the Garmin Alpha 200i, Garmin has recently released the Alpha 200 dog tracking handheld. While these two are essentially the same product, there are a few key differences consumers should be aware of prior to purchase.
InReach vs. Non-InReach
While the Garmin Alpha 200 dog tracker has many of the same functions as the Garmin Alpha 200i, one noticeable missing component from Alpha 200 to Alpha 200i is the lack of an inReach menu on the user interface. The "i" in 200i stands for InReach, Garmin's satellite messaging service. After subscribing to a messaging plan through Garmin, the Alpha 200i gives users the ability to send and receive text messages, share track points while on the move, and view weather data, all without the need for cellular reception. Communication is done through the Iridium satellite constellation, meaning those in back country situations far outside of any cell coverage can still contact home, as well as other hunters with inReach-enabled devices.
S.O.S.
Users of the 200i with an active inReach subscription plan also have the ability to utilize the S.O.S. function on the Alpha 200i. If things go south out in the woods, pressing this button will put the hunter in contact with Garmin's 24/7 response team to alert emergency rescue teams in the area. Live updates and communication with responders make a crisis situation in the woods sound almost stress-free; they can casually text your 200i device as they near your location, or that of a downed party member.
Disclaimer: No, Garmin will not scramble the helicopters to look for your lost dog.
For users that hunt within fairly strong cellular reception, or those just interested in the extra features, durability, and larger screen of the Alpha 200 series rather than satellite communication ability, the standard Alpha 200 would suit the average houndsman's needs just fine. At a price point lower than the 200i ($699.99 vs. $749.99), and with many collars and combos currently on back-order as of this article, it may be a savvy move to save oneself the extra $50 if there's no conceivable future in which you would use the inReach on the 200i device.
Key Similarities
These two devices are practically identical. With both the Alpha 200 and Alpha 200i, users can benefit from direct-to-device BirdsEye downloads, a waterproof case, and anti-glare screen built in. Any chargers, accessories, or antennas compatible with the 200i would also work for its non-inReach cousin, the Alpha 200. And the two handhelds are able to track each other, so users with either device can still hunt together as well as simultaneously track any Alpha system collars such as the T5 and TT15.
The ability to group devices and collars into "Dog Groups" translates over from one unit to the other as well. Both 200 and 200i users will enjoy the ability to organize their devices, and both systems are compatible with the same Alpha T5 and TT15 collars, as well as their mini versions. As far as tracking range, you won't see any difference
Direct-to-device Birdseye downloads are also possible on both units, if a Wi-Fi connection is established. The 200 and 200i also perform updates automatically when new software is available. Users will notice that besides the inReach function, the interface is essentially the same.
For users trekking into the backcountry solo, those who hunt year-round, or even those who would prefer the option to subscribe to a 1-month plan in case of a future serious hunting expedition, the 200i is the clear way to go. If even one member of a hunting party has an inReach-capable device in case of emergencies, it could spell the difference between a small mishap and a disaster. And as far as peace-of-mind goes, inReach units are never very hard to convince a spouse to allot funds toward; something about being able to verify a husband's location or be in contact while in deep country appeals greatly to the wives of most outdoorsmen.
