Dogtra Pathfinder 2

Currently, Dogtra is in the process of rolling out the new DogTra Pathfinder 2. Let's take a sneak peek of the interface by downloading the Pathfinder 2 app, already available on your preferred app store.

New Features of the Dogtra Pathfinder2

Having both the Dogtra Pathfinder and Dogtra Pathfinder 2 apps open side-by-side, we can compare and contrast the two. Keep in mind that you'll have to have a Pathfinder 2 collar and receiver system to utilize the functions on the Pathfinder 2 app. You won't be able to link an original Dogtra Pathfinder, Pathfinder SE, or Pathfinder TRX system to the new Pathfinder 2 app.

Geo Fences / Mobile-Fence / E-Fence

The Pathfinder 2 has Three containment options, Geo-Fence, Mobile Fence, and E-Fence options. The Geo Fence was available on both the original Dogtra Pathfinder and Garmin Alpha/TT15 systems. With the Pathfinder 2, you'll also gain the new ability to set a Mobile-Fence or E-Fence.

Dogtra Pathfinder 2 Geo Fence: The Geo-Fence works the same as previously. allowing the user to contain their dogs based on points that you select on the map. The user will be alerted and the app will give an indication of the dogs status (inside or outside) and relay information about how many times the dog has crossed the boundary. The Geo-Fence will NOT automatically stim or correct the dog but instead has customizable alerts that you can set to appear on your phone so the user can make corrections to the dog.

NEW Feature with the Dogtra Pathfinder2 is Mobile-Fence, and E-Fence. We'll discuss the two options below.

Starting with the Mobile-Fence options on the Pathfinder 2. this feature allows users the ability to contain their dogs to an adjustable radius based on the location of their phone. If you're ever at camp, or going for a walk with your dogs, this is a great tool to keep your dog from wandering off too far without your knowledge. This Radius will move with you as the phone's location moves. With the Mobile Fence it does not stim or correct the dog, The app will alert you to the dog entering or exiting the Fence and the use can stim or adjust as needed.

Dogtra Pathfinder2 Mobile-Fence

The Dogtra Pathfinder 2 has a New E-Fence Feature that will contain and automatically correct the dog if it leaves the containment area set. With the E-Fence a user can create or configure a boundary around their property to receive alarms like the Geo-Fence or mobile fence. However the E-Fence has the option to deliver automatic corrections when the collar device leaves its designated boundary. It will vibrate the dog's collar warning them of the boundary and if the dog continues past the boundary it will give a stim command for 5 seconds based on the settings created. When you setup the E-Fence the boundary is Synced into the For dog collar for operation without the handheld. Owners looking for a containment solution, the Dogtra Pathfinder 2 may be a good choice.

Dogtra Pathfinder 2 E-Fence Boundary

Not all users prefer the phone-based tracking on Dogtra systems, but in this case it's handy. You're much more likely to have a phone on you around the house than a GPS clipped to your belt. With the E-Fence option, you can simply set your boundary points and then walk away, rest assured it will keep your dog from getting too far. Unlike previous systems, you don't have to babysit a dog all day, waiting to give a training correction when an alarm goes off. You can set your desired boundary points on the map just like setting a Geo-Fence, and an intuitive dog may potentially learn without your manual guidance where he or she should stop running. The E-Fence does not require a smart phone or GPS connection to operate, but will not show tracking information or deliver notifications.

Notification Presets

Another handy feature of the Pathfinder 2's app interface is the ability to customize, or choose a profile to receive notifications. The Pathfinder 2 already has built-in profiles for upland, coon hunter, and hog hunters. Apart from that, you can always customize the app to send the notifications you'd prefer to see.

Fit All to Screen & Patrolling

Do you find your dogs often get distracted? Go on patrol with the fancy new Patrolling feature. Your Pathfinder 2 system will switch between tracked devices every five seconds, so you, the astute handler, can monitor everyone's behavior simultaneously via satellite maps. Or switch to Fit All To Screen to view all of your tracked devices at once.

Apple & Samsung Watch Compatibility

Apple and Galaxy watch users can still enjoy compass-based tracking. Simply pair with your iPhone, and any Apple watch Series 5 and up will track your dog via a compass on the lens.

Cons: The Downside of Phone-Based Tracking

Keep in mind, there are a few downsides of a smartphone-based tracking system. Your iPhone is an expensive device that does a lot more than just tracking. Although many of the newer smartphones are becoming more water resistant, you will still need to be careful when crossing creeks or hunting in inclement weather. One thing to consider is that dropping your phone in a river or creek could potentially be more of a headache than just not being able to track your dogs. The second hang-up is battery life Running the corresponding app can severely tax your phones battery, we recommend getting a separate battery pack that you can charge your phone while hunting in the field.

Since battery replacement isn't an option and since your phone does more than just track your dogs, Dogtra users should hit the field with a sturdy case for their mobile device to prevent water or physical damage, and keep at least one fully-charged power bank in a pack to supplement your supply of electricity. Nobody wants to deal with a dead or broken smartphone at dusk with dogs running all over the place and no way to call for help if you get yourself into a scrape!

The Dogtra Pathfinder 2 system is currently available and will retail at $429.99 for the handheld GPS connector and collar to get you started, with additional collars weighing in at an affordable $279.99
