Garmin Rino

Hunting parties benefit greatly from the Garmin Rino line of GPS/handheld two-way radio combinations. The Rino line is designed with hunters, hikers and outdoor lovers in mind. What sets the Rino line apart from other handheld GPS units is the ability to talk with the other members of your party as well as "beam" your location to them via the radio function. Garmin offers three different versions of the Rino, each with a proprietary set of functions. The folks at Double U Hunting Supply,, carry the full range of the Rino line.

Garmin introduced the Rino line in the mid 1990s with the 110 and 120. These early models used the "ClikStik" control device; proprietary to the Kansas based company. Over the years the Rino line has undergone some big changes with many of them a result of trickle-down technology from smart phones and touch screen style devices and electronics. The modern line-up begins with the Rino 520 and moves up to the advanced Rino 655T. The current line-up uses quad-helix antennas and receivers. These help solve the problem of getting satellite reception under dense cover that the earliest models of GPS units were troubled with.

With the different models in the Rino line-up, it isn't always clear what the best model is for your trip and hunting needs. The current Rino line-up begins with the starter model 610 and goes up through the hyper-advanced 665T.

Rino 650

Captain Kirk himself could not have imagined such an advanced communication or navigation device like the Rino 650. The 650 is where the Rino line-up really goes high-tech. A large 3.5-inch glove-sensitive touch screen lets hunters keep their fingers warm and in the gloves as they use the various functions of this sophisticated handheld GPS/radio/hunting computer.

The quad-helix antenna, 3-axis electronic compass, barometric altimeter, and 5W FRS/GMRS radio, the Rino keeps and maintains your location accurate to within 3 meters even in dense cover or canyons. This is a boon to any hunter who works the dense woods or tight canyons. Like all Rinos, locations can be shared with others on the same frequency and maps from all over the world can be uploaded as necessary. The 650 is equipped for wireless uploads and downloads as well as transferring any accrued data from trips and hunts. The 650 is equipped with a 5MP camera to get photos of the game during your hunt.

Garmin recognizes the safety aspect of a healthy battery in these units and equips all of the line-up with a lithium-ion battery capable of up to six hours of continued use, or 12 hours of stand-by and sporadic use. A charger is included with each Rino, letting users plug in and charge up after each day's hunt or adventure. No need to keep buying batteries as the enclosed and self-contained battery can be recharged up to 2000+ times.

Computer Interfacing and Map Printouts

All of the Garmin Rinos have some method of getting the stored data onto a computer or laptop. This is through Bluetooth wireless or a USB connection. Once the mapping data and information is transferred users can print out the maps overlaid with the hunt's tracks, waypoints, even the exact coordinates of where the animal was taken. If you have to cache meat or the carcass for a recovery, drop a waypoint then print a map. It is as simple as pushing some buttons. In addition to the map and print functions, each Garmin Rino "timestamps" the waypoint, track or in the case of the 650 and 665T, the GPS coordinates of any picture taken with the camera. Users can transfer this timestamp data as well, helping to augment all of the hunt information gathered during the trip.

From Garmin

Garmin posts this to its website, giving users a comprehensive over view of the Rino's abilities:

"View multiple contacts on 1 screen, so even if you're far away, you can see where your friends are in relation to you"

"Customize Rino to be as well-rounded as you with different profiles, based on what you're doing"

"Record (and time stamp) notes you receive from contacts for later review, or forwarding"

"Use the track manager to keep tabs on who you've been following"

"Create more dashboards in more places with 1 touch access to the icons you want"
